42 days and counting

I'm such a lucky person to be able to hunt every year. I'm not the most experienced hunter out there, no, far from it. I don't have the ability to spend an incredible amount of time each year hunting, but I am grateful for the time I do get, and that time is rapidly approaching again.

This by far, is my most favorite time of year. Even more so that than the last week of December when just about everything is in season. You see, the Universe aligns itself perfectly right about now. For me, the hottest days are over in Texas, even though there are probably another month or two of hot and humid to come, I'm used to it, so it's not such a big issue.

I have to think a higher power aligned football season and hunting season. There just can't be another explanation. Training camp starts for the Dallas Cowboys of whom I was predispositioned to be a fan, ever since the 70's when my father would leave the room after the Redskins beat up on us in what some would consider a fluke game here and there.

The peaches on the beaten down tree in my backyard now start to show themselves as resilient and ready. Migratory dove, who have chosen to hang out in Texas year round dot the powerlines everywhere right about now.

Most importantly, me and my friends start plodding and planning. It's the various feeder that needs a bit of love and the food plots that are about to mowed. It's the game camera pictures and the velvet on the bucks we've been watching for the past couple of years. It's that damn elusive 300 pound pig who no one has taken yet.  It's the friends of friends, both on and offline who are gearing up for an opening day dove hunt. It's the conversation really... every year is different, everyone more joyous in someway than the last.

Texas is a wonderful place to know, to hunt the land it offers and to be a part of the community of those that hunt it. We are a special breed, you and I. This year is shaping up to be a nice one and I just want to say, Godspeed, enjoy and be safe.

Before you know it, February will be around and while we may be then talking about the past season we just experienced, we will for sure be looking forward to the future, once again.
